Hallowed be Thy Name ... families
Sunday dinner at mom and dad’s, or when I was a kid
Sunday dinner at Grampy and Babciu (pronounced “bob-cha”, Polish for grandma)
house.
Sunday was always special, set aside for family to
reconnect. My brothers were away at college and medical school, Sunday was the
day they called my parents’ to check in, those days there were no “cell phones
or computers” to communicate on, there was only “landline phones”. And in
college dorms there usually was only one or two hall phones in the dormitory,
so calling home was big deal.
They say we have advanced so far in society with
technology and thought … but have we advanced or lost our family values in the
process … I think so … Rare are the families that actually value “family” and
not “things of the world”… rare are the families that teach child to respect the
elderly, or even their own grandparents.
Sadly as I type this post, I think of yet more
shootings that occurred yesterday in my country. For the most part these mass shootings
are done by “white young men or boys”, and I cannot help but think… These types
of shooters are all of certain age group, with things in common … they are
isolated, usually have parents who are / or were not engaged with them or cared to be a “parent”
as in monitoring and knowing what their child is doing … and such parenting
does not start in the teen years, but from birth, if you choose to be a parent you
need to understand that it is a job, a hard and messy job, not just a means to
advance your DNA into the world. I also
think many parents do not want to put in the time … they buy video games for their
children so they can be amused all day by “killing things on screen” … thus
training the brain like an “elite athlete does”, when they focus and do mental exercises
to win the game …
Years ago we realized the dangers of tobacco smoke,
we now live the dangers of opioid addiction and drug abuse… when we learn the
dangers of violent video games and the brains they are changing in our youth … probably
never for it is a billion dollar industry
and adults are into it as well. So we live with and create mental zombies in
society. I personally have seen the behavioral changes in children that are allowed
to play video games for hours every day … and unfortunately, they usual are “white kids”… for the video
games industry is not cheap.
The mothers of the generation behind me will say … “that
is what kids’ do now a days” … my thinking is “no that is what kids are being
allowed to do” … take control, you are the adult, you are the parent … a child
does not have a well formulated consciousness and brain … you are putting garbage
into the child’s mind … thus the child can only output garbage into society … and
we are all soiled by such poor parenting …
So back to Sunday dinner of long ago … no video
games, no iPad or cells phones ringing at the table … just face to face
interaction and caring of the basic and foundational structure of society “the
family”…
Think family values … then society will have better
values … and think on Sunday and hopefully every day of a “higher self” … no
matter how you label God, or what religion you practice or even lack thereof …
to think of a “higher self” allows you to know your individual worth and will
allow you to respect the individual worth of those around you and you will do
no harm to others …
